ARGENTINA Y THE BEATLES

ARGENTINA Y THE BEATLES

ENENGLISH

ARGENTINA AND THE BEATLES

The Beatles never mentioned Argentina in their official songs or in formal group statements of the period. There are no lyrics or studio recordings by the four Liverpool musicians that directly refer to the country.

On an individual level, however, the history of the members of the band and Argentina is rich and includes several notable episodes.

John Lennon’s curious family connection

John Lennon’s family had an unexpected and early connection with the country through his father, Alf Lennon. During the 1930s, Alf worked aboard merchant ships and spent a long period in Buenos Aires. During his stay, he was arrested after a street fight and spent a night in a cell, a family story John learned about years later.

Paul McCartney and Argentina

Paul McCartney was the Beatle who most dramatically closed the physical distance with Argentina. In his solo career he not only mentioned the country countless times, but also made it one of his recurring tour destinations.

Paul first performed in Argentina in December 1993 at River Plate Stadium. He was struck by the passion and singing of the audience and famously described the Argentine crowd as “the biggest choir in the world.”

Ringo Starr in Argentina

Ringo Starr also visited Argentina and referred to the country during tours with his All Starr Band. He performed in Buenos Aires in 2011, 2013 and 2015, repeatedly thanking the country in his shows and social media for the affection and warmth he received.
