LENNON Y RACING CLUB
En 1967, cuando Racing Club y el Celtic de Glasgow disputaron la Copa Intercontinental, circuló una historia según la cual le preguntaron a Lennon por el fútbol y, al enterarse de que el rival del Celtic era Racing, habría respondido:
“¿Racing? ¡Me gusta Racing! ¡Viva Racing! ¡Soy de Racing!”
¿Por qué Lennon habría elegido a Racing?
La explicación más aceptada es el contexto británico: Racing enfrentaba al Celtic, y Lennon, como inglés, habría preferido que un equipo argentino derrotara al club escocés. La rivalidad histórica entre ingleses y escoceses habría sido el motivo de su simpatía circunstancial. El propio Juan Carlos “Chango” Cárdenas, autor del gol que le dio a Racing la Copa Intercontinental, sostuvo años después:
“Lennon no quería ni a palos que ganara el Celtic.” (Diario UNO). Y agregó una frase extraordinaria:
“Mi gol lo festejó hasta John Lennon.”

In 1967, when Racing Club and Celtic of Glasgow played the Intercontinental Cup, a story circulated according to which Lennon was asked about football and, when he learned that Celtic's rival was Racing, allegedly replied:
“Racing? I like Racing! Viva Racing! I’m a Racing supporter!”
Why would Lennon have chosen Racing?
The most widely accepted explanation is the British context: Racing was facing Celtic, and Lennon, as an Englishman, would have preferred an Argentine team to defeat the Scottish club. The historic rivalry between the English and the Scots would have been the reason for his circumstantial sympathy.
Juan Carlos “Chango” Cárdenas, scorer of the goal that gave Racing the Intercontinental Cup, said years later:
“Lennon absolutely did not want Celtic to win.”
He also left an extraordinary line: “Even John Lennon celebrated my goal.”
